REHABILITATION (36 days):
Awakening the Implant: “Awaking” is adjusting the brain to the new way of receiving sound input which involves intensive individualized habilitation and rehabilitation s carried out by a multidisciplinary team of speech language pathologists, educators of the deaf, doctor, audiologist, and other professionals. The program is patient-centered requires the collaboration of the recipient, family and the therapists to achieve greatest potential.
The awakening process involves the following two steps:
- Programming the device or “tuning” / “mapping” the device so the user can hear sounds through it; and
- The rehabilitation process whereby the user is taught to “make sense of” the sounds they’re hearing.
A cochlear implant allows for the access of sound that the patient has not been exposed to or used to. The brain needs time to recognize and understand these sounds as well as time to get used to them.
The awakening program would include but not be limited to the following:
- Detection between the presence or absence of sound
- Understand the difference between sounds and whole words
- Understand new sounds that have not been heard before
- Distinguishing sounds from each other
- Labeling the sounds with specific characteristics
- How to make speech sounds
- How to understand speech
- Improve listening skills
- Read along and follow someone else’s speech while they read aloud
- Help the user’s speech clearer. Learn and practice skills that will make the user more comfortable when talking
- How to understand someone talking without being able to see their lips
