Ideally, the most suitable donor is an identical twin, as the tissue type is identical. However, as part of the protocol for kidney transplant, the patient and the donor who must be a direct blood relative (brother/ sister, mother/ father, or son/ daughter) are required to undergo DNA testing and other extensive testing proving blood relation as well as further suitability testing due to the fact that this is a major surgery and all possibilities of rejection must be eliminated since consequences are severe.
Additionally, both recipient and donor would need to sign legal documentation stating that no monetary exchange associated with the kidney donation has/ will be taken place.
With that said, the kidney transplantation program offered in the Republic of Cuba is done in two phases whereby the first phase is to evaluate your both recipient and patient medical situation and to assess the suitability as well as the general health of the donor.
