National Centre for Minimally Invasive Surgery

The National Centre for Minimally Invasive Surgery is the national reference center dedicated to endoscopic surgery and related techniques. It is also the Postgraduate Education Centre of the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences, dedicated to training and certification of national and foreign specialists in the field of basic and advanced techniques of minimally invasive surgery.

It is a unit of Science and Technology Innovation responsible for the preparation and execution of research projects and controlled studies to evaluate technologies and patents in the field of endoscopic surgery.

Now located in Vibora, 10 de Octubre municipality, Havana, it was founded in 1994 at the General Calixto Garcia University Hospital (Hospital Universitario “Gral. Calixto Garcia”).

This center brings together a group of outstanding experts of high scientific level, consolidating more than 20 years of professional experience. As a leading center, it deploys a scientific and planned policy for the generalization of minimally invasive surgery throughout the entire country.

In March 1993, a multidisciplinary group was created at Calixto Garcia Hospital, formed by gastroenterologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and radiologists to comprehensively address endoscopic surgery, therapeutic endoscopy, and interventional radiology. This group developed, resulting in the creation in 1994 of the National Reference Center for Endoscopic Surgery.
