Medical education began in the central-eastern Cuban province of Camaguey in 1968 when a group of students from the University of Havana School of Medicine arrived there to conclude their training. The group was accompanied by a small contingent of teachers, who for love of country, decided to remain in there.
The implementation of educational programs and scientific research, which resulted in ensuring rigor and quality training of future healthcare professionals has been validated by the National Accreditation Board of the Ministry of Higher Education due to its quality of teaching in the careers of Medicine and Dentistry, academic activity and the implementation of international professional training standards.
It is not until 1980 that the Carlos J Finlay University of Medical Science in Camaguey was created and in 2010 it reached the university category.
To date, the university graduated more than 13,000 medical professionals in the fields of medicine, dentistry, nursing, health technology and psychology.
Currently, the total enrollment at the center exceeds 11 thousand students, out of which just over a thousand are foreigners with the recent addition of 300Argentinian students.

Founded in 1978, Universidad de Ciego de Ávila (University of Ciego de Avila) is a public higher education institution located in the town of Morón, Ciego de Avila.

Established in 1979 in Cienfuegos, Cuba. It is currently affiliated with the “Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima”Provincial General Hospital which offers education degrees to the university.
Presently, students from 52 countries are registered in different medical departments.
The institution is now led by a rector, Dr. Roberto Baños, who assumed the responsibility of maintaining the highest levels of academic professionalism and organizational adaptation, both administratively and academically.

Its primary function is to offer superior academic training and comprehensive medical programs to students of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Health Technology and Psychology in all undergraduate and postgraduate and training, diploma, masters and doctorates. Latin-American School of Medicine (ELAM), formerly Escue la Latinoamericana de Ciencias Médicas (in Spanish), is the chief of medical school in Cuba and considered to be an important pillar of the Cuban healthcare system.
Established in 1999 and operated by the government of the Republic of Cuba, ELAM has been distinguished as being the largest medical school in the world by enrollment with approximately 19,500 students from 110 countries reported as enrolled in 2013-2014. All those enrolled are international students from outside Cuba and mainly come from Latin America and the Caribbean as well as Africa and Asia.

Faculty of Medical Sciences of Holguin, Mariana Grajales is a medical University with outstanding national and international prestige. Its beginning was in 1983 when it started as a teaching department for Hospital General Docente “Mártires de Mayari“. It’s strong focus on human resource, quality and technical scientific commitment, in addition to high political, ideological and ethical preparation, have resulted in it meeting national and international commitments toward improving the primary healthcare of the Cuban population and disadvantaged countries.
The Mariana Grajales Coello Medical Sciences University was established within the Lenin Hospital in the 1967-1968 academic year, as a teaching department in collaboration with Universidad de Oriente. In 1973, the teaching unit was transformed into a School of Medicine geared towards 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th years students. By 1978, the university began to offer classes in the basic sciences for 1st year students. In the 1981 – 1982, stomatology program began to be offered and by 1982, Bachelor of Nursing was offered.

The University of Medical Sciences of Villa Clara was established in 1966. Currently, the university offers medical training to students from Camaguey, Cienfuegos, Palmira, Cumanayagua, Manicaragua, Esperanza, Ciego Montero, Morón, Cabaiguán, Ranchuelo, Perico, Camajuaní, Caibarién, Santo Domingo, Vueltas and Santa Clara.

Faculty of Medical Sciences of Sancti Spiritus or FCMSSP O UCMSSP Also called University of Medical Sciences of Sancti Spiritus (UCMSS) on Sancti Spiritus medical university is also famous as faculty Medical Sciences Faustino Perez de Sancti Spiritus, located in Sancti Spiritus, the capital city of Sancti Spiritus Province, Cuba.
A large number of foreign students have been registered since its foundation. Currently the university holds more than 700 foreign students from all over the world. The university is affiliated with ELAM (Latin American School of Medicine in the Capital city of Havana)

Established in 1982, the institution has graduated more than 10,000 doctors, dentists and nurses, including about 800 young people from across the globe and mostly from Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Today the university has about 270 teachers and 11,157 students in 25 field of medical specialty. Graduates of this university have assumed their role in 142 hospitals, clinics, laboratories including other educational settings, where they contribute to improve care to the people while honing their skills.

Universidad de Ciencias Médicas “Juan Guiteras Gener” de Matanzas dates back to 1969 with the enrollment of thirty, sixth year internal medicine students. The successful graduation of this student group led to the expansion into a complete medical program and the development of a comprehensive healthcare and in order to address the need of the health sector of the province.
1972 was culminated with the establishment of the Institute of Higher Education and medical teaching degree institute with the enrollment of 216 students.
In 1976, the Faculty of Medicine, was created and a full 6-year medical program was created. The program was later linked to the University of Matanzas.
In 1980-1981, the faculty was awarded an economic and administrative independence and the medical science budget unit was created, followed by joining the faculty with the Ministry of Public Health and the Higher Institute of Medical Science of Havana
In 1982 and 1983 respectively, the Stomatology program and Nursing degree were incorporated.
In 1985-1986, the university was legally elevated from the Faculty of Medicine to the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Matanzas.

Facultad De Ciencias Medicas Celia Sanchez Manduley dates back to the 1980s with the construction of Building I, II, and III and all supporting medical facilities. During such stage, the construction of the branch of medical science was established in the city of Bayamo, the capital of the province of Granma.
It is an institution of Higher Medical Education with a multi-based Teaching Assistance Research integration structure, it is responsible for the training and development of human capital with a strong scientific and revolutionary preparation for continuous improvement of the health system of the territory and Cuba’s international commitments.
The university takes credit for the graduation of 30,668 Cuban and foreign health in different specialties, including 9,000 doctors and 1437 dentists and 10,448 registered nurses with a proven academic and scientific quality.
The first students’ enrollment took place in between 1984 – 1985 with the admission of first year of medicine from the same province.
In 2003 -2004, a new medical educational model was adopted with the enrollment of 6813 students from different medical specialty.
The university conducts full medical certification programs in 21 specialties including a bachelor degree in nursing.
