Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery (INN)

WORLD-RENOWNED MEDICAL CENTERS

The Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery (INN) is the national founder and leader of neurosciences. In the 1960s, it began the training of the first specialists in Neurology and Neurosurgery. At the initiative of Professor Rafael Estrada Gonzalez, various specialties were developed at the institute covering several fields of neuroscience, to support clinical and surgical disciplines.

This center is a national reference for diverse fields of neuroscience and for the attention of neurological diseases that require highly specialized (tertiary) care.

The institute provides services for:

  • Cerebrovascular Diseases
  • Neuromuscular Disease
  • Epilepsy
  • Neurosurgery
  • Neurocognition
  • Neuropharmacology
  • Clinical Neurophysiology
  • Neuro-Ophthalmology
  • Neurogenetics
  • Neuroimaging
  • Neuroimmunology
  • Neuropathology
  • Neuropediatrics
  • Neuropsychology
  • Neuropsychiatry
  • Neurochemistry
  • Nutrition
  • Rehabilitation
  • Intensive neurological care
  • Movement disorders

As a result of the intense teaching work, the INN has become the main source of specialists in the branches of neuroscience. These specialists have either created and strengthened a service infrastructure in different regions of the country or joined newly created, highly specialized centers like Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital, the International Center for Neurological Restoration, and the Center for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias (CIRAH), among other prestigious institutions.

In a way, the INN has become, with the passing of history, a true Academy for Neurosciences in Cuba.
